What Is BioThane® Horse Tack?

What is BioThane® horse tack?

BioThane® horse tack is made from coated webbing designed to be strong, waterproof and easy to clean. BioThane® is the brand name for coated webbing manufactured by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. For equestrian use, it provides a practical alternative to traditional leather for bridles, halters, reins, breastplates and other tack.

LS Equestrian handmakes custom horse tack in New Zealand using genuine Beta® BioThane®. It is particularly popular with endurance and distance riders, trail riders and anyone wanting tack that can be rinsed clean after wet, muddy or sweaty rides.

Why use BioThane® for horse tack?

  • Waterproof: it does not absorb water in the way traditional leather or uncoated webbing can.
  • Easy to clean: mud, sweat and everyday dirt can usually be washed away with water and mild soap.
  • Low maintenance: BioThane® does not require leather conditioning or oiling.
  • Flexible: Beta® BioThane® has a soft, leather-like feel while remaining practical for regular use.
  • Customisable: it is available in a wide range of colours, including selected reflective options.
  • Practical for distance riding: waterproof, easy-care tack is useful when riding in changing weather and over long distances.

BioThane® bridles and horse tack

At LS Equestrian, BioThane® is used across our handmade tack range, including endurance bridles, bitless bridles, halters, reins, breastplates and accessories. Many designs can be customised in colour and sizing to suit the horse and rider.

Our bridle range includes two-part halter bridles, bridles with removable bit hangers, sidepull and crossunder bitless designs, hackamore-compatible bridles, multi-function bridles and traditional styles.

BioThane® vs leather horse tack

Leather remains a traditional and popular tack material, but it needs regular cleaning and conditioning. BioThane® is chosen by many riders because it is waterproof and requires less routine maintenance. Rather than asking which material is universally “better”, the more useful question is which suits your riding, climate and care preferences.

BioThane® vs nylon webbing

Nylon webbing is uncoated and can absorb water and dirt. BioThane® has a protective coating over its webbing core, giving it a smooth, wipe-clean surface and helping prevent moisture from soaking into the webbing.

Is all BioThane® horse tack the same?

No. BioThane® is available in different product types, widths and finishes, and the construction of the finished tack also matters. LS Equestrian uses genuine BioThane® with stainless steel hardware and bonded nylon stitching across our handmade range.
