Love the Colours? Here’s Where to Place Them

Love the colours, but not sure where to put them? You’ve found a combination you love, but then the order asks for primary, secondary and highlight colours. Which one goes on the noseband? Where does the contrast show? And do you really need three colours?

You don’t have to have it all worked out before you start. This guide breaks colour placement into simple choices, with labelled photos of real LS Equestrian bridles so you can see exactly what each choice means.

Whether you like traditional tones, a soft pastel combination or something bright for everyday, endurance and distance riding, your colours can be as simple or as individual as you want them to be.

Start with your bridle, then choose your colours

The same colours can look quite different on two bridle styles. One design may show a contrasting underlay, another may have separate halter and headstall straps, and a CrossOver adds a rope noseband to the combination.

Choose your bridle style first, then follow the labelled example for that style. The photos below show colour placement examples, rather than one fixed layout that applies to every LS bridle.

Primary, secondary and highlights made simple

  1. Primary colour: your main colour, giving the overall feel of the bridle.
  2. Secondary colour: the contrasting straps, fronts or underlay shown for your chosen design.
  3. Highlight colour: smaller details, such as corners or selected straps, where the design offers them. Your highlights can repeat your primary or secondary colour.

Three colour choices don’t have to mean three different colours. A two-colour combination can still have lovely detail. The Enduro example below uses Royal Blue and Gold, while the Deux repeats Lagune Blue in the highlights.

What look would you like?

Simple and coordinated: start with one colour you love and use a second colour sparingly. Repeat an existing colour in the highlights if your design has them.

A clear contrast: choose two colours you want to see together, then think about which should be the main colour and which should draw attention to the browband or noseband.

A brighter combination: keep your main colour as the starting point and add a third colour to smaller details. The CrossOver below shows how Bright Orange highlights work alongside Cyan Blue and Light Blue.

Try thinking “Where do I want the eye to go?” A contrasting noseband gives a different look from the same contrast used only on small corners. There’s no need to use every colour you like in one bridle.

1. Primary: Royal Blue
The main, most prominent colour.

2. Secondary: Pastel Pink
The browband front, noseband front, bit hangers and throatlash in this example.

3. Highlights: Seafoam Green
The noseband corners, browband corners, rear halter strap and little logo tag.

Optional added sidepull rings for bitless riding.

Notice how the Pastel Pink draws attention to the front of the browband and noseband, while Seafoam Green adds smaller touches. Follow the labelled areas when describing your own combination.

1. Primary: Royal Blue
The main colour throughout the bridle.

2. Secondary: Gold
The underlay on the browband and noseband, plus the bit hangers.

This is a two-colour example, with no separate highlight colour.

This is a useful example if you love a coordinated two-colour look. The Gold shows as underlay and on the bit hangers; there is no separate third highlight colour in this example.

LS Deux Two-Part

1. Primary: Lagune Blue
The main colour throughout the bridle.

2. Secondary: Violet Purple
The front of the noseband, front of the browband and halter head strap.

3. Highlights: Lagune Blue
The noseband corners, browband corners and rear halter strap.

Your highlights can match your primary colour, as they do here.

Lagune Blue appears as both the primary and highlight colour. Repeating it ties the smaller details back to the main colour, with Violet Purple providing the contrast.

Try your combination before you order

If you find it easier to see an idea than describe it, use one of our blank colouring templates. Save the picture to your phone or tablet and colour it in using a drawing app, or print it and try your colours by hand.

Keep a copy of your first idea, then try swapping the primary and secondary colours. Even with the same two colours, that swap can change the whole look.

Choose your template below. These are planning outlines; use the labelled photos above to check placement where we have an example for your style.

Bring the rest of your tack into the picture

Think about the reins, breastplate or halter you already use. You might carry one bridle colour through the rest of your set, or repeat a highlight colour for a smaller connection between the pieces. Everything doesn’t have to use exactly the same combination.

On a CrossOver, consider the rope colour alongside the BioThane® colours. The rope has its own pattern and can be part of the look you’re planning.

Make your colour choices clear when ordering

  • Name your bridle style. Placement depends on the design.
  • Use the actual colour names. For example, Cyan Blue, Light Blue and Royal Blue are different choices.
  • List your primary, secondary and highlight colours where those choices are offered.
  • Mention rope or other selected options separately. Check the choices available for your product.
  • Send your colouring picture or a reference photo if it helps explain what you want, and note anything you would change.

Screen colours and drawing-app colours are a guide. Check the BioThane® colour range and placement guide and confirm the colour names in your order. Available colours can vary with the material, width and options selected.

Still unsure? Send me your idea

You don’t need to know every strap name. Tell me which bridle you like, the colours you’re drawn to and whether you want a subtle or brighter look. A saved example or a coloured template gives us a helpful starting point.

Email me your colour idea, and we can work through where you’d like each colour to go.
